  1. Happy Valentine’s Day translates to “Feliz Dia dos Namorados” in Portugese, I find that very lovely because it sounds like “Happy day of lovers” in Spanish.

The pidgin word I chose is “malihini”. It is a Hawaiian word that means an outsider, stranger or a tourist. I chose this word because it reminded me of the term “gringo”, Hispanic people use to refer to tourists that visit their homeland. Today, there are about 1,000 native Hawaiian speakers and around 8,000 people who can speak and understand the language fluently according to the UCLA Language Materials Project.

The creole word I chose is “bonjou” which replaces the french term “bonjour” which means; good day, good morning or hello. I picked this word because its a very simple example of how language can transform over time. Haitian Creole is a French-based creole language spoken by about 10–12 million people worldwide, and the only language of most Haitians.
